The England football team has spent 48 hours in the company of Royal Marines training instructors from the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone, including a night camping on Woodbury Common.
Coach Gareth Southgate has paid tribute to the Royal Marines, saying thy like the elite services, the national football team serves Queen and country, but doesn't face the same consequences when mistakes are made.
The reliance and toughness the Royal Marines exhibit has done much for teamwork. Southgate says: “We're always thinking about football and the small world we're in, but there are life experiences that'll stay with you forever and I think this will stay with everyone – from our side and the Marines' side.
As anyone who's undertaken the training course on Woodbury Common, including the infamous sheep-dip will testify, the going sometimes gets tough.
