Construction work to improve London Inn Square and Sidwell Street in Exeter starts today.
The scheme will extend the existing one-way traffic system across Paris Street into New North Road with pavements widened outside the new John Lewis store.
There will be new tree planting, street furniture, bus shelters and a taxi rank. New granite paving will also be installed.
Works to the King William Street Car Park, which will be renamed the 'John Lewis Car Park', are cotinuing and is planned to reopen in early September.
Roadworks will be completeled by October for the opening of the new store.
