A change in the handling of non-urgent calls to the local ambulance service has begun this week, as a pilot scheme.
Ambulances are still being dispatched immediately when there's immediate threat to life, but in other cases handlers are being given an extra two minutes to assess whether an emergency response is needed.
The new scheme began at midnight on Monday and will be strictly supervised and monitored.
The service says it's designed to make sure ambulances are deployed to where they're most needed, and avoid unnecessary call-outs.
