Investigations underway

A massive emergency operation involving 18 fire crews from across Devon was launched yesterday as a major blaze tore through a school in Okehampton.

The alarm was raised just after 3:30 PM, with teams battling the flames at the Promise School well into the evening.

Some firefighters remain on the scene this morning to dampen down hotspots.

The roof has sustained severe damage, and the site located near the A30 remains cordoned off for vital safety assessments.

No one has been reported hurt, and the cause is being investigated.

Residents and members of the public have been urged to stay away from the area while these assessments continue.

The Promise School provides vital specialist support for approximately 100 children aged four to 16. In a statement to parents and the community, Principal Quentin Gunderson confirmed the school would be closed for the "immediate future."

The trust stated that further updates regarding the "provision for ongoing learning" will be shared as they become available.
