31 miles of new cabling being installed

Work on the Saltash Tunnel, which links Devon to Cornwall, has reached the main phase of installation of new technology.

National Highways is putting in 31 miles of new cabling in and around the 410-metre tunnel.

Already more than 20 miles of cabling had be installed through the tunnel, along with new internal tunnel gantries, and new sensors to improve air quality monitoring.

The work is costing £25 million to bring the tunnel up to modern standards. The first phase to upgrade the tunnel and traffic control system was completed this summer.

So far, 70 per cent of the cabling has been installed between the tunnel, bridge and control buildings, with the remainder being fitted and connected in the coming weeks before the system is fully connected.

Once the new tunnel and traffic control system is connected, tested and operational, ancillary work will continue next year, including the installation of roadside signage, which will require overnight closures on some week nights.
