Further complications have arisen in the work to stablise a listed building in Cullompton which has fallen into disrepair. The 17th-century Manor House Hotel is already covered in scaffolding and an adjacent road has been closed for months.
Work to tackle the unstable walls of the building has revealed more stonework in poor condition - meaning a larger area will have to be dismantled and rebuilt. The scaffolding will have to be reconfigured and supplemented by internal supports. It also means a larger area of Tiverton Road will need to be closed off. Carrying out the work is the responsibility of the hotel's owner and Mid Devon district council has told him it needs to be done urgently - if it doesn't happen the council has powers to intervene and could as a last resort compulsorily purchase the building.
