Our Best Mate Chase Day is dedicated to remembering the legendary racehorse who galloped his way into the history books. Did you know?
Three-Time Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner: He made history by winning the sport's most prestigious prize three years in a row (2002, 2003, and 2004), a feat not achieved since Arkle in the 1960s.
Never Fell: In his entire illustrious career, the bay gelding never fell at a fence or hurdle. This speaks volumes about his incredible athleticism, balance, and careful jumping.
Remarkable Consistency: He finished first or second in all but one of his 22 career starts, showcasing unparalleled consistency at the highest level. In fact, he won his very first race over fences right here at Exeter in October 2000.
The People's Horse: This superstar captured the hearts of racing fans across the nation, even receiving fan mail at his stable.
A Cheeky Character: His trainer, Henrietta Knight, affectionately described him as a "cheeky, arrogant child" if he were human, known for his playful weaving in the stable.
Unbreakable Bonds: He enjoyed a special friendship with his stable-mate, Edredon Bleu, also owned by Jim Lewis, with the Gold Cup hero apparently enjoying "bossing" him around.
Aston Villa Inspired Silks: His owner, Jim Lewis, was a passionate Aston Villa fan, which inspired the champion's distinctive blue and maroon striped silks.
Lasting Legacy: His impact lives on. There are bronze statues of him at Cheltenham Racecourse and near his training yard. Cheltenham also proudly features the "Best Mate Enclosure" named in his honour, and he was inducted into Cheltenham's Hall of Fame in 2007.
