Arson at Torquay home

Garage at property attacked

A fire around dawn on Saturday morning is being investigated as arson after Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service deemed it to have been started deliberately.

A member of the public called the service at 4.40am, saying trees were on fire at the rear of a property on Haywain Close, Torquay.

That turned out not to be quite right. Trees were fine, but a garage was ablaze.

One fire appliance from Torquay was immediately mobilised by Fire Control. The incident commander from Torquay fire station called for another crew from the town and others from Paignton and Newton Abbot.

Crews got to work to extinguish the fire using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, a safety jet and a thermal imaging camera.

The fire caused significant damage to the garage and some smoke damage to the domestic property attached. Police are investigating.
