A local man who was arrested after allegedly brandishing an axe at passers by and damaging a police vehicle has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
Police were called to Stockland at around 6.30 on Thursday morning after two men reported being threatened by a man with a large axe.
They escaped uninjured, but later the vehicle of a police dog handler was attacked and severe damage was caused to it's windscreen.
Armed response officers were called and negotiated with the suspect.
He surrendered and was arrested and was taken to Heavitree Road Police station in Exeter for questioning.
