Mollusc farmer frustrated
A Brixham mussel-farmer is calling on the government to sort out the blockage that stops him selling his mussels to his previous customers in Europe.
Molluscs that have to be purified before they can be eaten are now banned from being supplied to the European Union from countries that aren't EU members.
Mussel farmer John Holmyard wants heads knocking together. Whether it's the EU at fault or the UK, he just wants it sorting out. His once-thriving business is now in serious difficulties, having had no income since January. He has 15 staff and a mussel farm to support.
Aquaculture such as mussel-farming is not fishing and comes under different rules and regulations. It's claimed the government took its eye off the ball by not specifically including the sector in Brexit negotiations.
The UK's department for fisheries and rural affairs, Defra, claims it was expecting new rules to come in allowing trade to continue. Environment secretary George Eustice says he finds it "deeply frustrating" that the EU has "changed their position....but there's not a lot we can do."
