The Community Council of Devon is backing a campaign to give the groups running village halls a voice at Westminster.
The proposal, to set up an all-party parliamentary group on village halls, came out of BBC Radio Four's PM programme.
Village hall use has trebled over the past 20 years, with the buildings being used to provide education and health services as well as being a venue for social and community functions.
The Community Council is now asking users and supporters of halls to lobby their MPs to get them behind the idea.
