Celebrations as Exeter Chiefs win Premiership

The Exeter Chiefs are the champions of English rugby. A packed national stadium at Twickenham yesterday saw the Exeter side beat Wasps 23- 20 after 20 the game went into extra time, and was just two minutes away from the game going into penalties,

Exeter fought tenaciously from the start, and were within a two minutes of going into half-time in the lead when Wasps scored a try to move into the lead 14-10.

After a tense start to the second half, the Chiefs battled in Wasps territory, causing them to play defensively for much of the period. But with just 90 seconds to go, Wasps were three points ahead. Set to win, they faltered after a lengthy period of Chiefs press - and a mistake within striking distance was a gift the Chiefs didn’t refuse.

A Gareth Steenson penalty brought the scores level: 20-all.

And with just minutes to go before the match would have gone to penalty kicks, another Wasps error brought another Steenson penalty; and with it the Premiership title.

Tomorrow, the city will honour the Chiefs with an open-top bus parade, starting at St James Park and finishing at The Guiildhall for a civic reception.
