Exeter residents who need a short-term loan to tide them over are being urged to use a local credit union - not a loan company or bank.
Today local church leaders are joining forces with the Citizens Advice Bureau to raise awareness of the community-based saving and borrowing schemes.
The Bishop of Crediton will be visiting the Exeter branch of the Plough and Share credit union - and urging churches to use their local service to manage their money.
