Conmen have been using free Internet advertising sites to rip off buyers in the Exeter area. They've been offering household appliances for sale, but delivering rubbish.
An Exeter woman ordered a fridge on the free local advertising site - a man turned up in a white transit van and took the cash before she had a chance to unwrap the package he'd delivered.
When she opened it she found an old broken fridge probably from a recycling site.
Another buyer in Lympstone had a similar experience with a Gumtree seller - and police say they've also had reports of scams on Facebook buy and sell sites. Users of the sites are being urged not to hand over money before seeing what they've bought - and to report anything suspicious.
