Crediton residents are furious at plans by Mid Devon District Council to close its office in the town.
The town's Mayor and Liberal Democrat councillors are launching a campaign, including a petition, calling for it to stay open.
They have also submitted Freedom of Information requests on the building's running costs, the income it generates and the number of transactions carried out there.
Mayor Frank Letch says Crediton's many elderly residents depend on the facility.
