Decision time on future of popular city pub

t's an anxious day for the landlords and customers of a popular Exeter pub, which has been sold to a supermarket company.

A decision's due later on whether the company will get planning permission for the new store - which will mean they can knock down the Queen's Head pub at Polsloe Bridge.

The owners of the Queen's Head sold the pub to Farm Foods supermarkets last year - narrowly outbidding the landlords who are keen to keep it going and develop it into a B&B.

They and their customers launched a campaign to save their pub, which won the support of the local community, many of whom are regular and long-standing customers.

Today Exeter's planning committee will be told that although the loss of the Queen's Head will be deeply felt by the local community, there ARE other pubs people could use ... while the supermarket company have been wanting to invest in Exeter for some years and found no other suitable site.

The supermarket plan is being recommended for approval - but the final decision rests with the councillors.
