A vigil has been held at Upottery airfield in East Devon, where more than 13-hundred American paratroopers were transported on the night of June 5th 1944 to Normandy.
The 439th Troop Carrier group was led by Colonel Charles H Young.
His son, Charles D Young, travelled from the US for the event.
He says you can't underestimate the sacrifice made by all those, who lost their lives.
