Shanie Richie returns to Plymouth - REVIEW

Panto season has arrived in Plymouth in style!

An invasion of rats causes havoc in London town, and it’s down to Dick Whittington and his gang to triumph… bringing laughter, music and thrilling effects along the way.

Shane Richie returns to the Theatre Royal, having previously broken box office records, guaranteeing hilarity for all ages. His effortless warmth and cheeky humour covers all the bases, with silliness for the tiny tots, and, as is traditional, a smattering of gags just for the grown-ups… Every minute he’s on stage is either chaotic or joyful, and as his 40 year career on stage and screen continues, you can see why he’s a firm favourite in Plymouth’s pantomime.

Samuel Holmes plays The Spirit of Bow Bells, bringing solid theatrical sparkle. Local boy Sam has appeared in Plymouth more times than he would care to remember. With utterly stunning costumes and a gifted singer, he quickly builds a rapport with the audience and is a treat to watch.

Queen Rat is played by West End star and panto favourite Anne Smith, and has responsibility for the boos and hisses, and the evil deeds conspiring against Dick and his friends. There is shouting a-plenty from the frenzied youngsters in the audience, and nobody escapes her evil cackling!

Emily Beth Harrington captures our hearts as Dick’s love interest Alice Fitzwarren with a some top-notch singing; born in Plymouth, she brings a fresh and confident performance.

Iain Stuart Robinson is Sarah the Cook – and with over 30 pantos under his belt, there are countless giggles from the naughty jokes, fun and silliness which entertains all ages perfectly.

Kira McPherson plays Kitty Kat… and although not traditionally a speaking role, she brings her best feline dance moves to complement the troupe.
With a further 8 ensemble singers and dancers, and a posse from the Theatre Royal Junior ensemble, Dick Whitttington is a triumphant celebration of all that is wonderful about panto.

Packed with side-splitting laughs, well produced songs supported by a live orchestra, award winning special effects, a giant animatronic rat and flying double decker bus capture the attention of an already thrilled audience.

This panto has something for everyone, the whole family will be entertained. A fabulous, hilarious and magical night out.

Dick Whittington in on until Saturday 10th January 2026 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.
