Thunderstorms and flooding likely

Environment Agency and Met Office issue warnings

A week on from enjoying 30 degrees of heat, East Devon should get its wellies on. The Environment Agency's warning of flooding along low lying road and near rivers, especially in Exmouth, Ottery and around the Sid. They expect rivers to remain high throughout Sunday and ask people to take care near the areas of concern and monitor local weather conditions. 

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in the south west between noon and 10pm Sunday. They say that whilst many areas will stay dry, many won't, and heavy, thundery downpours can be expected. Moreover:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
