The Exeter Greenpeace activist Iain Rogers could be home from Russia soon after the authorities there granted the so-called Arctic 30 amnesty.
It means legal proceedings against them will be halted and they could be reunited with their families for Christmas.
The group were held in custody for two months after a peaceful protest against oil drilling in the Arctic, and were charged with piracy and hooliganism.
They're currently on bail but had not been allowed to leave St Petersburg.
