One of five nationally
Exeter residents are among the first in the country to be invited to take part in trials of a new vaccine for covid-19.
The NHS locally is recruiting people at the Nightingale Hospital at Sowton. They're trialling a vaccine called Novavax. It's not the one made for US drug giant Pfizer which is said to be 90 per cent effective.
A second centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for the Novavax vaccine will open later this month.
The National Institute for Health Research says 54 people in the area have been signed up so far this week.
Healthy volunteers aged 18 to 84 can take part. They want a quarter of them to be over 65, the age group most severely affected by covid-19.
