City awarded Purple Flag status
Exeter has officially been recognised as one of the UK’s premier after-dark destinations, becoming the only city in Devon to be awarded the prestigious Purple Flag status.
This status honours the city for its well-managed and vibrant nighttime events and venues, as well as its commitment to keeping people safe.
The Purple Flag status is a recognition of the effective management of streets after dark, including 24/7 monitoring from the city's control room.
This assures people going out for the evening or through the night.
Over the last few years, Exeter has implemented significant improvements, and is currently the only place in Devon to hold this status, joining around 80 places in the UK that have been honoured.
The process is vigorous, requiring towns and cities to go through a thorough assessment process to achieve and maintain it.
Nicola Wheeler, CEO of In Exeter, the city's bid, said: "We're absolutely delighted that Exeter has been awarded this prestigious accolade. It highlights Exeter as an exceptional city for a night out.
Our businesses and partners are committed to ensuring the well-being of all who come to enjoy the evening atmosphere. The city offers an outstanding and vibrant nighttime experience for all ages, with an ever-growing program of diverse events and activities."
Patrick Cunningham, Director of Exeter Phoenix, called the city the "cultural heartbeat of the Southwest," a city where creativity thrives after dark.
