Devon County Councillors have approved a plan to switch off some Exeter street lights at night.
A £1.7 million scheme to install remote monitoring technology has been given the go ahead.
It means that sensors will detect when pedestrian and vehicle numbers fall below a certain level, and will automatically switch lights off.
The scheme is expected to pay for itself after 6 or 7 years.
