Exmouth seafront road to be moved soon

Road to go behind new watersports centre

Realignment begins on 4 September

The date's been set for Exmouth's seafront road, Queen's Drive, to be re-routed round the back of an existing car park.

On Tuesday 4 September, at least six months of work will begin, bringing an end to years of angst about whether the scheme would ever get off the ground. Its part of a multi-million pound investment in a new look for the seafront, designed by seaside town regeneration specialists Hemingway Design. That company is currently asking Exmouth's residents, workers and visitors what new facilities and design elements they'd like to see along the seafront.

Preparatory work for the road re-routing is already underway behind hoardings. Queen's Drive will be open throughout the work. The existing car park says open until a new one nearby is ready "after the summer holidays", according to East Devon Council's statement, somewhat vaguely, considering Exmouth's schools go back after the summer holidays the day after work begins.

Councillor Philip Skinner,  who is chairman of the Exmouth Regeneration Board, says: “It’s been a great summer with all the popular and different uses on the Queen’s Drive Space. Now we’re working hard to ensure that things move on at a pace.  I’m sure that once the Queen’s Drive redevelopment is in place, it will bring new investment into Exmouth that reflects the changing leisure expectations of residents, visitors and businesses.”
