New Year's Eve drama off Exmouth
A family cut off by the tide in Exmouth on Friday have the town's RNLI volunteers to thank for being able to see in the new year safely.
Two adults, a child and a dog found themselves unable to off the beach at around 2.30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
Both the Exmouth inshore lifeboat and all-weather lifeboat, along with a coastguard rescue team, headed out to search the shoreline around Orcombe Point.
Within a quarter of an hour of launching, the family was found by the inshore lifeboat team and taken on board. They were transferred to the larger vessel a short time later and brought into Exmouth marina.
None of the family was hurt and Rufus the Labrador is said to have "seemingly enjoyed his excursion on the lifeboat and was none the worse for his experience."
The charity’s inshore lifeboat, commanded by helm David Preece, with volunteer crew Geoff Mills and Henry Mock and the all-weather lifeboat, crewed by second coxswain Scott Ranft and crew volunteers Mark Sansom, Harry Griffin, Dougie Wright, Ed Steele and Charles Swales took part in the rescue.
Exmouth's RNLI team say tide times and heights vary considerably throughout the month and can be unpredictable. Tifdal safety can be found at: https://rnli.org/safety/know-the-risks/tides
