It's emerged that a house fire in Exeter yesterday evening - which filled the building with acrid smoke - was caused by a faulty bed warmer with no thermostat.
The house in Courtnay Gardens in Alphington didn't have a smoke alarm and three residents only just managed to get out before being overcome by the fumes.
They were taken to hospital.
Devon Fire and Rescue say they've had a lucky escape - and the incident highlights the dangers of obsolete electrical equipment as well as the need for a working smoke detector.
