Devon and Somerset's fire brigades union has expressed bitter disappointment that a controversial programme of cost-cutting measures has been approved by the fire authority.
In addition to the efficiency and back-room savings, the changes will mean that six appliances in the region will be crewed by on-call firefighters... although none are in the Exeter area.
The FBU had collected a petition of more than 27 thousand signatures against the cuts, which are designed to save 5.5 million pounds over two years in response to a shortfall in Government funding.
The fire authority say they had to make difficult decisions but have supported the least damaging options, and that no fire stations will close and no firefighters be made redundant.
