Four people rescued from fast-flowing water

Woman calls to say she's trapped

A member of the public has called 999 to says she and three others were trapped in fast-flowing water at Ludwell Lane, Exeter on Thursday morning.

One fire engine from Middlemoor, another from Danes Castle in central Exeter and a water rescue appliance from Exmouth were mobilised  and an ambulance crew also headed to the scene following her call at around 11.30am.

By the time the fire service arrived, two people were out of the water, but another two still needed help. Fire crews used water safety PPE to rescue them.  Both casualties were taken to hospital.

It was the second time in just over 12 hours that the fire service was called into action to help someone trapped in water. On Wednesday evening they were called to a report of a person in the brook next to Dawlish railway station.

One fire engine from Dawlish, one from Teignmouth and the specialist rescue team from Exmouth searched the water there both upstream and downstream. The person was eventually located on the bank of the water and helped to dry land by fire crews. They were suffering from hypothermia and were looked after by paramedics on the scene.

During both these periods, the Met Office had a yellow warning in place for heavy rain in the area . The Environment Agency also warns that many rivers are at risk of flooding.
