MP welcomes £108k package

Torbay MP Kevin Foster has welcomed the news Plainmoor Pool (Swim Torquay) will benefit from a £108,500 investment to improve its energy efficiency.

The funding is part of the Swimming Pool Support Fund (SPSF) which has invested £80 million into 442 swimming pools across the country since last year.

The investment now secured for Plainmoor will fund energy efficiency measures at the popular community pool by Photo Voltaic (PV) panels and Replace Fluorescent Lighting with LED Lighting, relieving financial pressure on the facility by reducing running costs.

When Swim Torquay missed out on the first round of the SPSF, Kevin Foster worked closely with the charity to ensure funding was secured from the second. This included meeting with the Sports Minister Stuart Andrew MP and Sport England to push their case.

Under the new sports strategy, the Conservative Government is aiming to get 3.5 million more people active by 2030, meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance of 150 minutes per week of exercise for adults and 60 minutes per day for young people.

Alongside the Swimming Pool Support Funding for Plainmoor, the Admiral Swimming Centre will also get £61,700.

Commenting, Kevin Foster MP said: “Plainmoor Pool lies at the heart of the local community and provides a range of activities for it. This funding will help improve energy efficiency and reduce running costs, helping secure it for the long-term.”

The Conservative Government is investing over £60 million in 325 swimming pools across the country, making swimming more accessible, allowing more people to make the most of the positive health benefits associated with exercise.

It’s also part of a national scheme to get more active by 2030.
