Early morning call to police leads to RNLI and HM Coastguard search
Mystery surrounds an incident in Exmouth early on Saturday morning, when it was reported that a car could have gone into the water from Mamhead slipway.
A member of the public told police they'd seen the vehicle on the slipway and someone running away at about 5am - and shortly afterwards the car was no longer there.
Police have been guarding the scene since the alarm was raised just after 5am. The slipway was closed until the afternoon.
A major incident unit was posted to the slipway, and frogmen went into the sea on several occasions.
By nightfall, the recovery operation was called off and the slipway reopened.
