Exeter police are hot on the trail of people making hoax calls
They've highlighted certain hotpots where the problem occurs.
The police are working closely with the Fire and Rescue Service to educate local school children about the effects hoax calls can have. The video is available on line via Devon and Cornwall Police’s You Tube channel.
Many 999 calls prove an unnecessary use of police time with numerous people telephoning the police when it is not a police matter.
Police deal with a large number of accidental calls, maybe where children have been playing with the phone or where the keypad on a mobile is left unlocked. Simple precautions can prevent police being alerted unnecessarily.
All 999 calls are investigated, even silent ones. Anyone found to make malicious 999 calls will face prosecution, which will lead to a criminal record.
