Hundreds of homes without power

Hundreds of homes and businesses in Exeter have been left without power this morning following a fire at a substation in the cente of the city.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service attended the scene on Fore Street after multiple 999 calls at around 7o'clock. Multiple properties were told to evacuate and roads around the area were closed.

The external electrical substation was destroyed and some properties near it have been affected by fire and heat.

Multiple crews from across Devon have been at the scene to extinguish it and dampen hotspots in the roof of an adjacent property. Crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two foam jets, two hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera.

One person, with a headache, was treated by paramedics, but no other injuries have been reported.

Around 500 homes have been without electricity because of the fire at the substation and National Grid say engineers are working hard to restore the electricity as quickly as possible.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: " Riverside Leisure Centre will be used as a respite centre for displaced residents and to provide information."
