It's emerged that two men who got into difficulty in the water off Exmouth yesterday evening were not wearing lifejackets.
One was swept away by the current in the River Exe after he and another man were taken close to the shore by a tender and dropped off in waist-deep water.
Both them managed to get on to dry land safely.
Meanwhile the man at the helm of the tender fell overboard and had to be rescued by the lifeboat.
The RNLI says it could have been a much more serious incident.
