Those trading at Exeter Livestock Market are being offered the checks in an outreach project by the local NHS.
The initiative is targeting those aged over 40 with the aim of detecting symptoms of illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes - so that they can be treated.
The checks will be extended to other markets in Devon in the future.
