Exeter Cathedral has applied for millions of pounds in Lottery funding to put the nearby Roman baths on show to the public.
The Heritage Lottery Fund is being asked for 8.7 million pounds to help fund the excavation of the baths and the creation of an underground visitor centre.
The baths under Cathedral Green are among the most significant Roman remains in the UK and could attract a hundred thousand extra visitors to Exeter every year.
A decision on the funding application will be announced in April.
