Heavy Horse Festival begins next Thursday

The Devon County Show has announced acclaimed actor and countryside advocate Martin Clunes will officially open the Heavy Horse Festival, in association with Whistlefish on Thursday 21st May.

A lifelong champion of Britain’s native heavy horse breeds, Martin Clunes is not only a familiar face on screen but also a dedicated heavy horse owner. His own collection of gentle giants has shaped a deep personal commitment to preserving these iconic breeds, many of which are now considered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust to be at risk.

Martin Clunes said: “Heavy horses have been part of my life for many years now, and I’m endlessly moved by their gentleness, their intelligence, and the sheer presence they always bring to an occasion.

"Spending time with my own horses at home is one of the greatest joys I know. To see these magnificent breeds celebrated here at the Devon County Show — and to meet the people who care for them with such passion — is a real privilege.”

This year’s Heavy Horse Festival at the Devon County Show will showcase some of the UK’s rarest breeds, including Shires, Clydesdales, Suffolks, and Percherons.

Visitors can expect close‑up encounters, expert demonstrations, dray-pulling and the unforgettable sight of these powerful horses working in harmony with their handlers.

Show Secretary Lisa Moore said: “We are thrilled to welcome Martin Clunes back to open the Heavy Horse Festival for the second year running. His genuine love for heavy horses and his advocacy for their preservation makes him the perfect figurehead to launch this section which has become a visitor favourite.”

The opening ceremony will take place in the Heavy Horse section where Martin will cut the ribbon before the first demonstrations of the day begin.
