More work needed to prevent child exploitation

Child sexual exploitation could be happening on a daily basis across Devon, according to a report by the county council.

It says the authorities currently don't hld enough information to take preventative action.

The report, by a county council committee task group, says there's no intelligence to suggest organised child exploitation networks are operating here.

But it does raise concerns about the lack of information held by the police, the council and other agencies - and it calls for a new database to be set up to record cases of exploitation, so that prevention work can be better targeted.

The report also recommends several other measures including spot-checks on children's homes .. and  more training for social workers, housing officers and the police, to help them recognise the signs that a young person is being abused.
