Newton Abbot could turn into a 'super town'

Nearly 5,000 homes planned

The local plan allocated homes at Buckland Barton, Bradley Lane, Bradley Barton and in Newton Abbot town centre, while 370 homes are planned for the Penns Mount and Abbrook sites in Kingsteignton and 175 new homes at the Torquay Road site in Kingskerswell.

A total of 4,755 new homes are planned across the 10 sites in and around the town with a currently population of just over 25,000.

A Teignbridge District Council spokesman added: “People are living longer, the population is increasing and households are becoming smaller. This means that more homes are needed. The latest figure requires Teignbridge to build than 750 homes per year, which exceeds current levels of development. If the council does not meet government targets, there is a risk that unplanned development could take place across the district.”

Although the local plan is currently being reviewed at the issues stage, extra housing will have to be built in Teignbridge as it is predicted that the population will rise from 132,000 to 149,000 by the end of the life of the local plan, and the requirement from the government for extra housing to be built is likely to rise from 620 houses a year to 750.
