Newton Abbot council homes will help families in need

'Projects like this are vital'

Work will begin this month on a major project to build new council homes on a car park in Newton Abbot.

Teignbridge Council says the Sherborne House project will mark an important next step in its plans to provide much-needed affordable housing.

Cllr Richard Buscombe (Lib Dem, Bradley), the council’s executive member for housing, said: “Projects like this are vital in helping us meet local housing needs.

“We appreciate that construction activity can cause some temporary disruption, and I would like to thank local residents and businesses in advance for their patience and understanding while the work takes place. We will continue to keep people informed as the build progresses.”

The project will deliver 23 high-quality social rented flats, using brownfield land to increase housing supply and support local communities.

Funding has come from a £2.7million grant from the government’s Homes England Affordable Homes Programme and £525,000 from its Brownfield Land Release Fund.

The building contract has been awarded to a local contractor Nevada Construction, and the council says it will minimise disruption as far as possible.

Nevada Construction director Richard Towl said the company was delighted to have been appointed to create a ‘Passivhaus’ development, one which meets international energy efficiency standards.

He added: “The partnership with Teignbridge underscores our shared commitment to sustainable delivery and carbon reduction, ensuring that we construct energy efficient spaces which benefit both the community and the environment.

“By adhering to the rigorous Passivhaus standards, we will be supporting the council’s environmental goals, whilst also creating essential new homes in Newton Abbot.”
