Newton Abbot councillor cleans signs

Mike Joyce was fed-up with budget cuts that neglect the cleaning of important signs.

He went out armed with a bucket of water, a mop and squeegee and the all-important Hi-Viz to clean up the signs.

His work now means that signs on the approach to Newton Abbot can be clearly read by all visitors to the market town.

And he has also called on other councillors to take action in any way they can to demonstrate committee to the place they are elected to represent.

Cllr Joyce said: “I believe that it’s important to demonstrate your commitment to your town, by not just attending meetings, but by taking action if you can. I am retired and so I have the time to do this and it would be marvellous if others, who have the time could spend just a few minutes each week in their area, making a difference.”

Sally Henley, Newton Abbot town development manager, added: “Unlike District and County Councillors who receive an allowance, Newton Abbot town councillors work very hard on an entirely voluntary basis on behalf of the townsfolk. I am so grateful to all of our town councillors who give so much of their time working in the community and at local events.”
