Flying tech could save lives

It’s not just parcels and letters taking to the skies anymore; the NHS is now using drones to revolutionise healthcare.

In a new partnership with the Open Skies Network, same-day prescriptions, vital medical supplies, and patient samples will soon be transported through the air between GPs and hospitals across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The goal is simple: cut costs, save time, and ensure patients in remote, hard-to-reach areas get the care they need faster.

These autonomous flights will use AI to follow pre-programmed routes, with the ability to be remotely controlled if needed.

While this partnership is a first for the region, it isn't the first time the Health Service has looked to the skies to reach its goals.

Previous successful trials in Scotland and the Isle of Wight have already demonstrated how drones can speed up test results by bypassing road traffic, deliver urgent medication to island communities and reduce carbon emissions.

Residents can expect to see them in the skies over the next couple of months.
