A survey's found that so-called payday lenders are targeting people on low incomes in Exeter - without looking into their ability to repay the debt.
Fifty-seven people who'd taken out payday loans from 25 different lenders were questioned by the Exeter Citizens' Advice Bureau.
The survey found 86 per cent of the lenders didn't check the borrower's personal finances and 76 per cent of the borrowers felt pressured into agreeing to extend the repayment period, while receiving little explanation of how much this would cost them.
Respondents to the survey said it was too easy to apply online for a loan.. and that lenders they'd used bombarded them with emails and text messages urging them to borrow again.
The CAB are working locally to raise awareness of the risks of payday loans - and encouraging companies to give low-cost loans to employees in financial difficulties.
