It happened just before the polls were about to close at St Andrew's Church in Alphington.
Two members of staff were in the station at the time and they dialled 999.
No one is believed to have been hurt, and the incident is not believed to be political.
The ballot box finally arrived at the count at the Corn Exchange at 11.45pm, an hour after all the others had done so.
