Police across Devon and Cornwall have issued a warning to local residents
They've been asked to be vigilant of bogus callers, attempting to gain entry to properties claiming to be workmen.
This follows a report of a bogus caller in the Tiverton area this week
A man approached an elderly woman’s home in Tiverton and claimed to be from British Gas and was there to carry out some works.
He walked in to her kitchen and asked her to go into the bathroom and press down hard on the bathroom taps. When the victim was in the bathroom she saw him walk past and try to go into her back bedroom, she followed him and stopped him from going in. He left with nothing taken.
This was repeated and finally the victim called British Gas who confirmed that there were no workers in the area.
Police advice to residents is to deny entry to anyone into your home unless you know who they are. If callers are genuine they will have official identification or they will return another time when a friend or family member is present.
