The Devon Partnership NHS Trust - which runs mental health services - has won funding for a project to reduce violence on psychiatric wards.
Half a million pounds will pay for staff to work with a London health trust which has developed a system for identifying distressed patients and stopping their behaviour becoming violent.
The local trust had to compete with around 200 others across the country to win the money from the Health Foundation.
