Exeter gaol has received a broadly good report, following an un-announced visit by inspectors.
They found that the prison was overcrowded like most others, and that inmates didn't spend much time out of their cells.
But the report said the limitations of the environment were mitigated by the excellent relationship between staff and prisoners, and that there were good arrangements in place to receive and induct newly-arrived inmates.
