Remembering Adam Stansfield

Tenth anniversary of City player's death

It's 10 years since Exeter City striker Adam Stansfield died at the age of 31 following a short battle with cancer. His number 9 shirt still carries his name at the club, the family stand is named in his honour, and the Adam Stansfield Foundation, launched by his family, is his legacy.

'Stanno', to use the name by which fans and colleagues knew him, played 160 games for City between 2006 and 2010 in a period which saw the club move from Conference purgatory to League One heaven (admittedly not for long).

Current City manager Matt Taylor says: "I was new into full-time professional football environment but Stanno welcomed me and was a great character to have in the changing room - someone for the younger players to look up to and admire, but also someone who went out of his way to make you welcome.

"You would walk past him, he would smile, he would say hello, you'd grab a beer with him and he'd smile, in training he would run after a ball and keep on smiling, it was just his attitude and personality. As a person he was second to none. He was an honest player, a runner and someone who would give you everything, every minute of every single game and in training."
