Scepticism about police merger proposal

A proposal to merge smaller police forces to save money is being met with scepticism by the organisation representing rank and file officers in Devon and Cornwall.

The Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan Howe claims it's necessary - and has worked well in Scotland and Holland.

If such a policy was ever introduced, it could see Devon and Cornwall Police merging with nearby forces such as Dorset or Avon and Somerset.

The police federation says they already share resources with Dorset to save money, and it's hard to see how a merger would significantly reduce spending.
