An Exeter university researcher has found that concerns about Christmas being too commercialised are nothing new - and are the reason behind the designs of many Victorian greetings cards.
Dr Patricia Zakreski says the makers deliberately used fine art illustrations so that the cards wouldn't look too mass-market, and could be seen as bringing artistic works to the wider public.
Her study by is thought to be the first to examine Christmas cards in this context.
