Police are warning that distraction thieves are operating in supermarket car parks in places including Exmouth, Crediton and Cullompton.
Shoppers have had thousands of pounds stolen from their bank accounts after being spied on as they entered their PIN numbers in card machines or cashpoints.
The thieves then distracted them in the car parks by asking for directions, and stole their purses or wallets from their vehicles.
Police suspect two men in their 30s, of Eastern European appearance.
